I’m working on a Writing question and need guidance to help me study.
Module 2 investigates America on the domestic front in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Americans, after the Civil War, had to come to terms with their civil war and with the meaning of America. The first lesson in Module 2 examines Reconstruction, and so will add to the information you learned at the end of Module 1. Although Constitutional amendments abolished slavery, made former slaves citizens, and provided voting rights for black men, white terror and Southern politicians regaining power prevented the implementation of the post-Civil War amendments in the Southern states. An economic downturn caused many in the North to withdraw their support for Reconstruction. The economic downturn that influenced federal policy regarding Reconstruction is part of the larger story of industrialization in the late 19th century. The second lesson focuses on the economic history of the late 19th century. From the end of the Civil War to the turn of the 20th century (c. 1900) America underwent the Second Industrial Revolution. Industrialization was concentrated in the Northeast, yet the South also saw the rise of urban centers, notably Atlanta, which was able to grow as a major city thanks to the laying of railroad tracks. Industrialization allowed for greater national and international trade, even Midwest farmers became a part of these national and international trade networks. Farmers, with their image of rugged individuals and subsistence independence, found their reality at odds with the ideal of the farmer. Industrialization also changed gender relations and class relations. A growing impoverished working class contrasted with the small number of increasingly wealthy people. The income inequality of the late 19th century is only comparable to the income inequality of our own time. Never before had the gap between rich and poor been so immense, nor would it be during a large part of the 20th century. It is timely that we investigate the late 19th century considering the changing nature of the American economy, the growing income inequality, and the return of populist politics. It can help us to better make sense of the time in which we live, so that we might navigate it wisely. Finally, lesson 3 focuses on the Progressive Era of the early 20th century. The mood of the early 20th century prompted the government to begin to take action to help consumers and workers.
