Please read the attched readings and answer the following 4 questions using only the readings provided.
I expect students to use the course readings and class materials to complete the exam. Use many specific examples from the course readings and cite the material if you quote with simple ” ” and (author name and page). I am not interested in misc. online sources. I will be testing your understanding of the course materials with a focus on the assigned text books and other course materials.
1.Using the Castañeda article, explain how reports of sexual violence by soldiers against Amerindian women threatened the entire mission plan for California, the symbolic meanings of rape, how rape is rationalized among conquering nations and how the notion of Aristotelian theory applies.
2.Discuss the agreements contained in the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, Articles 5, 8, 9, 10, the Protocol of Queretaro. Summarize the international agreements contained in each article and point out a historical significance for each article based on your reading in the course.
4. “According to Omi and Winant, the significance of studying race is not to analyze the biological aspects of a people’s heritage, but rather to understand the politics and processes of racial categorization.” (Menchaca, p.2) Based on your reading of Menchaca’s Introduction and in your own words, explain why and how Menchaca incorporates this view into her analysis of the racial heritage of Mexican Americans.
5. Menchaca explores the implications of land reorganization laws following Mexican independence in Chapter Seven of her book. Explain how Pio Pico and his family became one of the most powerful Californios and his connection to the San Diego region.
